It isn't fair for those on benefits to be better off than those in work

Commenting on the Government’s Spending Review, Adrian said, “These are painful cuts especially for law and order and local councils, but this is a package. While we might all find points to disagree with, the new Government has had to deal with Labour’s legacy that left Britain with the biggest deficit in its peacetime history and the biggest deficit in the developed world.”

Adrian continued, “Carrying on as we were would have seen interest payments on our debts spiralling. We already borrow £1 in every £4 and pay out £120 million every day to foreigners – money that could be spent in our hospitals and schools.”

“There’s been much debate about the fairness of the cuts. It isn’t fair that people who go out to work see their neighbours on benefits not working better off than them. Labour completely failed to reform welfare. The new Government have set about welfare reform with zeal and they should be applauded for it. Reductions in quangos, government advertising and Whitehall costs are also welcome.

We’ve also prioritised measures to rebalance our economy and create the jobs we will need. The protection of the science and adult apprenticeship budgets are especially welcome, while the support for the Mersey Gateway project will help our businesses get their goods to market."

Adrian concluded by saying that the spending review had nailed the lies that Labour told during the election in West Lancashire. “Local Labour were spreading lies that Sure Start funding would be slashed and concessions for older people would be removed which haven’t happened. No doubt the MP will now criticise these cuts, but the former Labour chancellor had pencilled in a massive £44 billion of cuts and she needs to explain exactly what she would cut if she is to have any credibility on the issue.”
