Education, education, education?
A Schools minister has been left red-faced after claiming more than half of West Lancashire’s schoolchildren don’t speak English! Jim Knight claimed that 6,614 out of 12,641 pupils don’t speak English as their first language - that’s a whopping 52%! Adrian, who discovered the information and passed it to the local press says "The information, which came from the Department for Education and Skills, has made its way unchallenged into Hansard , the official record of parliamentary proceedings. Apparently the DFES is blaming it on a ‘clerical error’ and a department spokesman confirmed it would be issuing the correct statistics shortly..... when they've worked it out.
