Rosie challenged to head-to-head debate
Newly selected Conservative candidate Adrian Owens today challenges sitting MP Rosie Cooper to a public debate. In a letter inviting Ms Cooper to debate with him in public, Adrian says “The open primary process by which I was selected sparked political interest among the voters of West Lancashire: indeed around half the audience of 150 in the Civic Hall on July 6th were members of the public, not local Conservative members.” “It is often stated that the public are apathetic about politics these days. I have never agreed with that view. In campaigning, I have always found the public interested in, and often passionate about, political issues. Cynicism is rife but that should not be confused with apathy.” Adrian says that by issuing a challenge to the local MP to debate with him head to head local public interest in politics can be built upon. “I’m willing to debate with Rosie Cooper anytime, anyplace, anywhere in West Lancashire. I’ve let the public know my detailed views on many issues in the past 10 days, yet on many crucial issues we still do not know where our MP stands even after 2 years in Parliament.” Adrian continued. “In any debate I’m sure members of the public will have lots of questions for the both of us, but I want to ask our MP why drug dealers are being released early from prison to resume their trade in human misery. I want to ask her why if Gordon Brown is making housing such an issue, he changed the rules 3 years ago so that when a council house is sold in West Lancashire the £4-5 million raised each year has to be sent to the government rather than be retained for local projects including housing improvements. I want to ask her why if welfare to work was such a priority for Labour, 30% of our young people are still not in education or employment.” Adrian concludes “I’m sure Rosie has some awkward questions to ask me too so I look forward to her accepting my challenge.” UPDATE: 18 July 2007 - Rosie Cooper has declined the invitation to debate head-to-head.
