West Lancashire MP votes down measures to improve hospital cleanliness
West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper was one of 10 Labour MPs to vote down Conservative attempts to make action on hospital super-bugs effective. Conservatives had proposed having better screening for infection, lower bed occupancy rates and a programme of frequent cleaning instead of the one-off ‘deep clean’, promoted by Gordon Brown. The issue arose in a committee stage debate on the Health and Social Care Bill. Shadow Health Minister Stephen O’Brien, who pressed the Government on the issue during the debate, said: “The Labour Government continues to be soft on super-bugs whilst patients and their families up and down the country suffer. “How can Ben Bradshaw and the Labour members vote against Conservative amendments to include better bug screening, lower bed occupancy rates and frequent cleaning instead of a one-off deep clean? How can they look their constituents in the eye and say they are doing their best to tackle hospital infection?” Adrian Owens, the Conservative General election candidate for West Lancashire said “Hospital in-patient treatment is worrying enough without the threat of acquiring a super bug infection. Research shows that screening patients on admission, reducing bed occupancy and having frequent targeted cleaning all reduce super-bug infection rates. I am very surprised that our MP did not feel able to support these sensible measures.” Copyright © 2008, Adrian Owens - Revised -- 18/01/08 |
