Adrian hits out at latest hospital cuts

Adrian Owens, whose ward covers Ormskirk hospital has hit out at the latest staff cuts at the debt-ridden hospital trust.

Adrian Owens said that the latest cuts which involve axing housekeepers whose role was to combat the hospital superbug MRSA show that patient safety is under threat.

“Given the financial situation, it would appear that savings must be made, but there are plenty of targets for savings before frontline patient care is jeopardised.”

Adrian went on to question the whole direction of the local hospital service. “The number of administrators at the hospital grew by 5% the year before last. Although the trust accounts have now been altered to try to disguise this growth by changes to the staff category report, it is very likely that this growth continued in the last year too.”

“One matter that is clear in the hospitals’ accounts is the large rise in the salary of the Chief Executive over the past 2 years. The increase is somewhere between 14 and 25%. I believe in rewarding success and have no objection to high salaries in principle. However when this current Chief Executive has led the trust into these financial difficulties and is approving the redundancy of staff whose work directly impacts upon the safety of patients then I feel bound to protest.”
