Let's work to make our roads safer
West Lancashire Conservatives have launched their "Safer Roads” campaign. Launching the campaign, Conservative General Election candidate Adrian Owens said "West Lancashire has the worst road safety in Lancashire with deaths and injuries at unacceptably high levels. Worse, the accident rate has risen by an alarming 12% in the past year." The campaign’s main focus is a petition calling on Lancashire County Council to devote more money to small road safety schemes, particularly those close to schools including the introduction of variable speed limits near schools at peak hours during term time. Adrian is already working closely with local Conservative councillors and activists to collect petition signatures from parents and others outside schools in the area. Signatures have already been collected in Halsall, Dalton, Burscough and Lathom. Other areas will be visited over the coming weeks and months. Adrian said “178 Lancashire children were killed or seriously injured on our roads last year. This figure is much higher than for any other county and is only exceeded by the figures for the whole of Greater London and for the West Midlands. Lancashire county council have spare funds this year to make a real difference in this area and I hope our campaign persuades them that making our roads safer should be a top priority.” Adrian pointed out that the county council received over 200 requests for small road safety schemes each year but currently only provide funds for around 65 to progress. “Road traffic accidents are a cause of human misery. They can cause not just physical but also emotional injuries. People often have to give up work and cope with lifelong disability. Prevention is far better than cure and we urge the County Council to do much more, given how dangerous our roads are.” You can add your name to the petition calling on the county council to spend more on road safety here.
