Bad News Budget: £110 extra in taxes on families across West Lancashire

Responding to the Budget last week, Adrian Owens, Conservative General Election candidate said “The cost of living is rising fast, but Gordon Brown’s Government has added to it with a barrage of new stealth taxes. This is a bad news Budget, that adds £110 a year to the tax bill for families across West Lancashire.

“The changes to vehicle excise duty will adversely affect the vast majority of local drivers and because the Government is not offsetting these tax rises with big cuts in taxes on greener vehicles they risk damaging public support for green taxes altogether.

Adrian continued, “Those who drink, run businesses, work and drive will all pay increased tax from April. The doubling of income tax for those earning around £16,000 a year because of the scrapping of the starting rate of income tax, announced in the last budget but taking effect this April, is the most objectionable and damaging change of all."

“The truth is that taxes and borrowing are up because the Government failed to use the good years to prepare for the bad years. Real-term incomes are already falling. The Government should be belt-tightening as they seem to expect households in West Lancashire to do.”
