Rise in debt problems worrying

Responding to the news from the Citizens Advice Bureaux that mortgage arrears problems had shot up by 35% in the first two months of 2008, Adrian Owens, Conservative General Election candidate said:

“I recently visited the West Lancs CAB in Skelmersdale (pictured left with CAB Manager Brian Millington) and I know from what they told me that debt problems are mounting locally too. Last year, the district council took the forward-looking decision to double our financial support to the CAB for debt advice. That extra money from the council is helping the local bureau cope with the increased demand from people who are struggling to cope with mounting bills.”

Adrian added that he was worried that the increase in income tax in April for those on low income would add to the growing debt problem. He said, “I cannot understand why a Labour Government is doubling income tax rates from 10% to 20% for those on low incomes around £16,000. At least, we have an excellent local CAB to help those in difficulty with finances, and I would encourage people to contact the CAB at the earliest opportunity. Their advice is free.”

The local CAB can be contacted on 01695-723110.
