Fight to save Newburgh Post Office begins

The postmistress at Newburgh Post Office, Irene Allen, was informed last Wednesday that the post office in Newburgh faces closure, subject to consideration of further consultation on the matter

Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate who lives in Newburgh and whose family are regular customers at the threatened Post Office said:

“I learned about this shocking news when I called in to make a purchase. Irene was virtually in tears. This closure decision has been badly thought out. The assessors did such a poor job that they didn’t even note that the post office has disabled access.”

“The closure would also threaten the future of the village shop and café associated with the Post Offfice and even the roof over Irene’s head. The Post Office is a real hub in Newburgh. For example, it is used by the local police for their community meetings.”

Adrian concluded, “I know that people in Newburgh will be appalled by this closure proposal and I and other local Conservatives will work with the parish council and other political parties to hopefully make the Post Office see sense. The tragedy is that we had an opportunity to rethink the Post Office closure programme in the House of Commons two weeks ago, yet our MP voted to press ahead with the closures.”
