Time for Edge Hill neighbours to unite
Adrian, whose ward includes Edge Hill University, has called on the neighbourhood to unite in the face of the University’s latest provocative move. Adrian is urging local residents around all sides of the University boundary to form a united front to deal with the University. He said, “Over the years, I have received numerous representations from local residents concerned about Edge Hill’s plans, but frequently only when a planning application directly affects them. This allows the University to ‘divide and rule’ and pick off small groups of residents.” Adrian commented that the latest emerging proposal for nine separate buildings close to St Helens Road housing more than 250 students was a case in point. “This proposal will enable the University to continue its relentless growth. Another 250 students on campus will likely mean another 500 students in properties in the town, yet the University considers this major proposal to be so ‘insignificant’ that they only consulted ten households!” “Last summer, Edge Hill started a major community consultation. The next stage in that consultation was due out by now, but is not proceeding. Instead it has been replaced by tactics which give the perception of playing one set of local residents off against another and a return to piecemeal development – what some residents have dubbed “planning by stealth”. That’s why it’s time for the local neighbourhood to unite and form a cohesive group that cannot be so easily ignored or brushed aside.” Copyright © 2008, Adrian Owens - Revised -- 09/04/08 |
