5000 West Lancs families still lose out from Labour 10p tax change

Adrian has warned that more than 5,000 West Lancashire families are still likely to lose out thanks to Gordon Brown’s ill-conceived abolition of the 10% income tax band.

Adrian said “In spite of the Government’s desperate U-turn last week, we’ve estimated that more than 8,000 West Lancashire families are still paying more tax and seeing their take home pay drop, just as prices for everyday products such as food and fuel rocket.”

“No one is yet benefiting from the promised compensation, and looking at the announcements from the Chancellor to date, it’s not clear how the Government can practically backdate compensation for all these people. We estimate that more than 5,000 of the 8,000 families affected in West Lancashire will still end this whole sorry saga worse off.”

“We should be aiming to raise personal tax allowance thresholds dramatically and take the low-paid out of income tax altogether. Instead, we get a complicated and demeaning package from the Government. They expect the low paid to continue paying this higher income tax and then claim their own money back through various methods such as working tax credit which already has very low take-up rates.”
