ADRIAN OWENS - Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, West Lancashire

1 in 10 of local working age population on long-term benefits

Commenting on a new analysis that shows more than 6,600 people in West Lancashire have been claiming benefits for 2 years or more, Adrian Owens Conservative General Election candidate said:

“These figures mean that more than 1 in 10 of the local working population is on long-term benefits. This starkly shows that Labour’s welfare to work policies have failed. In the past few years we have seen unprecedented numbers of people coming to work in the UK from overseas, yet the number of local people on long-term out-of-work benefits account for two-thirds of total benefit claimants.”

“Benefits should be a safety net for people between jobs and for those who genuinely cannot work because of health or disability. Getting long-term unemployed people into work isn’t easy, but it can be done. I used to run a social enterprise in Liverpool which did just that.”
