ADRIAN OWENS - Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman, West Lancashire

NHS 60th birthday still brings big challenges

Improving the health of West Lancashire residents is the biggest challenge facing the NHS as it turns 60, according to Conservative General Election candidate, Adrian Owens.

Adrian, whose life was saved by NHS doctors and nurses following a hill walking accident in 1989, says “Quality healthcare for all, free at the point of use must remain our guiding principle. Yet, the health of West Lancashire residents could be so much better. Instead of the relentless and demoralizing focus on targets, politicians should trust the professionals to deliver health improvements. For example, cancer survival rates are poor compared to our European neighbours and recovery from strokes and heart disease below the European average.”

“The experience of patients must also be a priority. People place a high value on being able to access health care easily and locally. Conservatives are committed to retaining the family GP and district general hospitals and I will fight to see more services delivered locally.”
