Local dental patients still not smiling
A House of Commons Select Committee report published this week goes a long way to explaining why thousands of West Lancashire residents are still without an NHS dentist according to Adrian Owens. Dentists in UpHolland and Ormskirk have recently withdrawn from the new dental contract forced on them by the Labour Government. Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate said: “Conservatives consistently opposed the new dentist contract in Parliament. The crude 3 price banding system and the "treadmill" approach demanded is pushing dentists to leave the NHS. Now, a House of Commons Select Committee has underlined these concerns.” Adrian concluded “I would prefer to see a system that encouraged dentists to practice preventative dental practice. For example, dentists’ salaries should be based more heavily on the number of patients on their books and the number of check ups they carry out. In this way we could encourage dentists back into the NHS. Unfortunately, unless the current Labour-imposed contract is changed, then local residents will continue to suffer.” Copyright © 2008, Adrian Owens - Revised -- 10/07/08 |
