Campaign for safer roads continues
West Lancashire needs safer roads as a priority. That’s the message Adrian Owens is pressing this week, as local Conservatives continued to gather signatures on a petition to Lancashire County Council. Adrian says “West Lancashire has the worst road safety in Lancashire over the past 5 years, with deaths and injuries at unacceptably high levels. Worryingly Lancashire as a whole has the fifth worst accident record in the country, worse than much more populated areas such as Greater Manchester and Merseyside.” “That’s why I’ve introduced a motion at district council this week which calls on the county council, as the agency responsible for roads, to devote more money to road safety. We’ve taken our campaign to parents outside ten local primary schools and got hundreds of signatures on our petition which we will present to the county council in September. This council motion is part of the wider campaign to persuade the county council that more must be done to keep road users safe, especially the most vulnerable.” Adrian pointed out that the county council received over 100 requests for small road safety schemes each year but currently only provide funds for around 70 to progress. “Too often, it takes a tragic fatality before any steps are taken on dangerous stretches of road. That is wrong, especially since many of these small road safety schemes cost only a few ten of thousands of pounds and pay for themselves in reduced injuries within a matter of months.” Copyright © 2008, Adrian Owens - Revised -- 17/07/08 |
