adrian presents results of transport survey to william hague
Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party, William Hague visited Burscough on Friday to listen to the transport concerns of local residents. Mr Hague was accompanied by Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate and County Councillor William Cropper.
They met with representatives of Network Rail and Roger Bell from the local Ormskirk, Preston and Southport Travellers' Association to discuss the Burscough Curves, walking close to the site of the old track bed.
Following this site meeting, Mr Hague fielded questions from around 25 local residents who were among more than 1200 who responded to a recent constituency-wide transport survey. Also present at this meeting was Peter Mileham who chairs the Conservative Party Transport in the North commission.
Adrian presented the results of the transport survey to Mr Hague saying, "The response rate at 15% was very high for a survey of this type. That reflects the strength of feeling on transport issues locally - something Mr Hague heard for himself in the meeting. The need for a rail link into the centre of Skelmersdale and the Ormskirk bypass were hot topics, but so too were other issues relating to cycling, bus links, and control of HGVs."
William Hague said at the launch of the Transport in the North Commission, “The Conservative Party is determined to make the North of England's transport network stronger because we know a stronger infrastructure makes for a stronger North.”
The northwest gets a poor deal on transport funding receiving only £292 per head. The national average is £323 per head while London receives a whopping £667 per head.
