wales shows solution for MP accomodation

Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate today welcomed the recommendation that the second home allowance for members of the Welsh Assembly should be abolished and replaced with a taxpayer funded flat.

Adrian said “The report to the Welsh Assembly recommends the solution to the MP second home scandal which I have long argued. It says that members of the Welsh Assembly should be provided with a flat provided by the public purse within five miles of the Assembly.”

“I hope that the Committee on Standards in Public Life recommends a similar solution for Westminster. It would cut the cost to the taxpayer, allow the taxpayer to benefit from any capital gain if property prices rise; and end the second home scandals we've learned about these past few months.”

The recommendation is contained in the report of the Independent Review Panel, National Assembly of Wales, July 2009 entitled Getting it Right for Wales. See www.assemblywales.org
