Welcome cut to speed limits on county roads

Adrian Owens, West Lancashire's Conservative General Election candidate, this week welcomed news that Lancashire county council is to reduce speed limits on 12 stretches of road in the constituency. However he also called for a greater policing presence on the area's roads.

Adrian said “It's very welcome to see these speed reductions on the more major rural roads. For example, I'm pleased to see a reduction in the speed limit on Hall Lane in Lathom. Last year, I led local Conservatives as we collected signatures at the primary school for our road safety petition, and I know the level of concern among parents there.”

“West Lancashire has a poor road safety record and excessive speed plays its part. The emphasis now must be on looking at speed restrictions on some of the more minor rural roads not considered in this latest review. Higher Lane in Dalton is one obvious example. We also need a greater policing effort to catch the small minority of drivers who drive while using a mobile phone or at dangerously high speeds. I have written to the Chief Constable asking that greater efforts be made by the police in this regard.”
