WHAT DO YOU THINK OF PLANS FOR LONG-TERM RESIDENTIAL CARE?
Adrian wants to know your views on the proposal announced at Conservative party conference regarding long-term residential care.
He says, "There are huge problems with our care system in England. Currently, if you need to go into a care home at the end of your life, you must pay all the costs yourself if you own just £23,000 or more in assets – including the value of your home. There is currently no affordable insurance solution on the market and each year around 45,000 elderly people are forced to sell their own home to pay their care home fees."
"At our annual conference in October we announced plans to turn this situation around. Under a Conservative Government you would no longer be forced to sell your home to pay the fees if you need permanent residential care in a care home."
Adrian explains how the new Conservative scheme would work. "You would have the option of making a one-off payment of £8,000 either on retirement or at age-65 to insure against the possibility that you will need residential care at the end of your life and will have to sell their home to pay for it. We would open the scheme to existing over-65s, not just new retirees, for a fixed ‘window' of time so everyone has the opportunity to benefit. In return, you would receive a guarantee that absolutely all permanent residential care fees would be waived – for life."
"I believe this scheme would be a huge step forward for England's care system and a weight of worry lifted from the shoulders of elderly people and their families. It is an immense injustice that thousands of elderly people every year are forced to sell their family home and lose almost all their life savings because of the Government's care means test. In twelve years, Labour have failed to offer older people any hope of a way out of this crisis."
