adrian welcomes step towards tidal power in Mersey

Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate has welcomed the news that Peel Holdings, the operators of the Port of Liverpool are aiming to seek planning permission by 2012 for tidal power generation in the Mersey estuary.

Adrian said “I highlighted the potential for the north-west to be a leader in clean energy technologies, and especially tidal, last year . These plans from a company with significant financial strength take us one step closer to the reality of large scale tidal power in our area.”

Adrian also pointed out that Peel's plans have the support of the region's Institute of Civil Engineers and that tidal power has the potential to provide around half of the north-west's electricity needs.
