adrian welcomes extra support for parents in conservative plans

Adrian Owens, the Conservative General Election candidate today welcomed Conservative plans for increased support for parents in West Lancashire.

The plans announced by David Cameron include an increase in Sure Start health visitors and more flexible parental leave as well as an opportunity for independent organisations such as Home Start to run children's centres.

Adrian said “We will invest in an additional 4200 Sure Start health visitors across the country and those in West Lancashire will help to provide the additional personal and professional support in the home that some families need.”

The Conservative prospective MP commented that he was delighted that Conservatives would keep Sure Start and build on it, focusing on the families most in need. He was particularly pleased that the party nationally had recognised that organisations such as Home Start should be able to bid to run children's centres.

Adrian said, “I've kept in close contact with Home Start West Lancashire over recent years and with just two paid staff for most of that time they have worked with local volunteers to support more than 200 families with young children. Home Start are working with many of the harder to reach families in most need and they have the work practices and attitudes which don't scare such families away – something which can happen with larger ‘government' initiatives.”
